Calculadora de visibilidadev1.0Visual tracking is how most recreational rocket flights are recovered: you watch the rocket to apogee, spot the parachute open, and track it to landing. Past a certain altitude the rocket simply becomes too small to resolve against the sky, or its contrast against cloud is too weak to pick out. This calculator estimates the maximum altitude at which you can visually track both the rocket (during ascent) and the parachute (during descent), based on body diameter, parachute size, colour contrast against the sky, atmospheric visibility and your viewing angle. It's a useful pre-flight check: if your rocket will disappear from view above 1km and you're planning a 3km flight, plan for GPS telemetry or a beeper-based finder.
Typical 20/20 vision resolves about 1 arc-minute of angular size, or roughly 1mm per 3.4m of distance. A 55mm rocket subtends 1 arc-minute at about 190m, beyond that it becomes a single dot, and past roughly 500m it fades into the background. A 100mm diameter HPR rocket has about 2x the visual range as a 50mm low-power rocket. Large hi-vis parachutes (1m+ diameter) are visible much further than a rocket body because the chute opens up to present a much bigger target.
Contrast matters more than raw size. Against clear blue sky, dark colours (black, dark blue, dark red) stand out well. Against overcast, dark colours disappear and bright fluorescent colours (orange, pink, yellow) win. The safest recovery colour is hi-vis fluorescent orange or pink, visible in both conditions. White parachutes look great in photos but vanish against cloud cover. Camo patterns are a disaster for tracking. If your rocket airframe uses dark paint, compensate with a bright parachute.
Haze, humidity and particulates scatter light and reduce contrast even when objects are theoretically within visual acuity range. On a clear morning after rain, contrast is maximised and tracking distance is best. Hot hazy summer afternoons with humidity, dust or pollution can halve the effective tracking distance. The calculator accepts a visibility setting so you can model your actual conditions.
For flights above about 1.5km you'll lose sight of the rocket during coast, even on a clear day. Solutions:
Audio beeper: Cheap and reliable for landing location within a 200-300m radius. Many altimeters include a buzzer; aftermarket beepers are widely available.
Radio tracker / locator beacon: Active 433 MHz or similar beacon with a directional receiver; typical range 1-5 km on the ground. The old-school choice before GPS.
GPS telemetry: Live position updates to a ground receiver. Altus Metrum TeleGPS/TeleMega, Eggtimer TX, Featherweight GPS and Missileworks RTx are common options. Essential for high altitude, long-range or forest recovery. Also useful for filming real-time ground track.
Smartphone-based trackers: Some altimeters integrate with phone apps over Bluetooth or cellular; useful for shorter flights within mobile coverage.
Beyond electronics, a few simple choices improve your odds: large bright parachute (1m+ for HPR, hi-vis colours), dual deployment (main deployment at 200-500m AGL makes descent tracking much easier than a full descent under one chute), tracking powder or streamer tape attached to the shock cord, and multiple observers (one tracking ascent, one scanning with binoculars for descent, one watching instruments). For high altitude flights, redundant electronic trackers (GPS + audio beeper) eliminate single points of failure.
How high can I see my rocket? Typically 400-600m for a 55mm bright rocket; 1-1.5km for a 100mm HPR; less against cloud or in haze.
What colour parachute should I use? Hi-vis orange or fluorescent pink/red. Avoid white, dark colours and camo.
What if I lose visual contact? Rely on audio beeper, radio tracker or GPS telemetry. Essential above 1.5km apogee.
Does weather matter? Yes. Clear dry air gives longest tracking; haze, humidity and overcast reduce it significantly.
Do binoculars help? Yes for descent tracking, not for ascent (too fast). Best with a dedicated spotter.
