Our web-based uploader lets you update or replace firmware on your device using a standard USB cable — no software installation required.

Simply connect your device to your computer via USB, then click the Connect Device button and select your port when prompted.

Once connected, choose the firmware you'd like to install and click Update App to update, or Full Install to completely replace the firmware.

1Connect your Mercury to your PC or Laptop using a USB cable.

2Hold down the BUTTON on your Mercury and then press and release the power button while holding down BUTTON. This will put the device into boot/programming mode.

3Now you can connect your Mercury using the Connect Device button and install firmware.

Having trouble? Check you're not using a power-only USB cable that doesn't allow data (try another one), and try putting it into boot mode again. Also ensure you're using a supported browser as detailed above.

1Ensure the power switch is set to OFF.

2Hold down the tiny button on the Nano while connecting it to your PC or Laptop with a USB cable. This can be tricky — we find it's easiest to connect the Nano end first so you can hold the button with one hand and plug the cable into your PC or Laptop with the other.

3Your device is now in boot mode and you can install firmware.

1Connect your Jupiter to your PC or Laptop — you should now be able to connect and install firmware.

2If it does not work, hold down the BUTTON while pressing and releasing the POWER BUTTON and try again.

1Connect your Neptune to your PC or Laptop — you should now be able to connect and install firmware.

2If it does not work, hold down the BUTTON while pressing and releasing the POWER BUTTON and try again.

1Connect your Snapshot Screen to your PC or Laptop — you should now be able to connect and install firmware.

2If it does not work, hold down the BUTTON while pressing and releasing the POWER BUTTON and try again.

This can be down to a few things — here are some solutions in the most likely order.

1Your device needs to be in boot mode. Ensure you follow the instructions in the "Connecting Your Device" section above to put your device into boot mode before connecting.

2Unsupported browser or platform. You need to be using a PC or Laptop with a supported browser such as Google Chrome, Edge, or Opera. It's also worth noting that these browsers on mobile devices may not work for firmware updating. See the full browser & OS support table here.

3You are using a power-only USB cable. Some USB cables don't have data lines and are only for supplying power. Try a few different cables in case this is the issue.

4Another application is using the serial port. If you have a serial monitor, terminal emulator, or IDE (such as Arduino IDE, PlatformIO, PuTTY, or similar) open, it will hold the serial port and prevent this tool from connecting. Close any serial monitor or terminal windows and try again.

5You have a Nano altimeter. These use ESP32-S2 chips which can take a few tries to connect currently. Hopefully the framework we use to connect will be improved soon! So far we've found 80% of connections happen within 3 tries, but the worst test we ever saw was 4.

6Your USB port is faulty. Try another USB port on your computer, or try a different computer altogether.

1Old Nano without a security key. If you have an old Nano that does not have a 512-bit security key installed, all current Nano firmware will not run. While we did send out replacement devices with keys to all users, some old hardware is still out there. Unfortunately you won't be able to update these.

2Data corruption during flashing. It's not likely, but some data corruption may have occurred during the firmware write. Try updating the firmware again — and worst case, use the Full Install option which will erase your entire device and install fresh firmware from scratch.

1Borrow a computer. See if there is a public computer near you that might work, or perhaps a friend or family member could help?

2Send it to us. If you are really stuck and must update, you can send your device back to us and we will install fresh firmware for you. We may need to make a charge for return postage, and unfortunately we can't be held responsible if your device goes missing in the post to us.

1Don't touch the cable. Any movement of the USB cable during flashing can interrupt the connection. Make sure the cable is secure and avoid bumping it while the progress bar is running.

2Your computer went to sleep. Some computers will suspend USB ports when entering sleep or power-saving mode. Disable sleep/screen saver temporarily, or wiggle the mouse occasionally during longer writes.

3Try a different USB port. Some USB hubs and front-panel ports can be unreliable for sustained data transfer. Try a port directly on the back or side of your computer if possible.

4Close other serial applications. If you have another program open that uses serial ports (such as Arduino IDE, PuTTY, or a terminal emulator), it may be competing for access. Close it and try again.

1Don't worry! Installing the wrong firmware won't damage your device. Simply put the device back into boot mode and flash the correct firmware using the Full Install option to start fresh.

2Check chip compatibility. When your device is connected, the tool automatically filters the firmware list to only show compatible options for your chip. If you see a firmware greyed out or hidden, it's not compatible with your device.

⚠ Web Serial API requires Chrome or Edge 89+. Firefox and Safari are not supported.

ESP32-S2 detected — this chip uses native USB which can be tricky to sync on the first attempt. This is normal. Please try connecting again — it usually works within 2–3 tries. Make sure the device is in bootloader mode (hold the boot button before plugging in — on the Nano this is the tiny button on the board).

Connection failed — your device may not be in bootloader mode. Hold down the BOOT button while pressing the power button to enter boot mode, then try connecting again.
